Labor Offers Over $1.5 Million For Adult Job Training

Grants to target adults and dislocated workers & fishing disaster areas

Saying the services will help adult clients get the skills and assistance they need to enter long-term employment, Commissioner of Labor Ed Flanagan announced the availability of $1,565,000 in job training funds today.

Discouraged workers, especially those in areas affected by the recent fisheries disaster, those dislocated from an industry lay off, and those requiring more employable job skills, stand to benefit the most, Flanagan said.

Labor is encouraging qualified organizations to respond to a request for proposals to provide job training and occupational services to adult and dislocated workers within the Balance of State Delivery Area, (the area outside of Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley), in order to develop a stable labor force in Alaska. The grant money will be distributed across the Southeast, North Slope and Interior (excluding Fairbanks), Northwest, Southwest, rural Southcentral, and the Kenai Peninsula regions of the state.

"Special consideration would be given to proposals demonstrating an awareness of and preparation for new job opportunities as well as a commitment to preparing women for nontraditional occupations," said Flanagan.

The deadline to apply for grants is July 16, 2001, and a copy of the RFP is available
through the on-line public notice system at www.state.ak.us.

Labor is issuing the request in partnership with the Balance of State Workforce Investment Board, a local policy-making board that oversees job-training programs in the State.
