Division awarded grant for national business outreach project

Alaska's Employment Security Division is one of just seven state agencies to participate in a $1.6 million nationwide effort to promote one-stop career systems to states' business communities, Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development Ed Flanagan announced today.

The effort, underwritten by the U.S. Department of Labor, uses contemporary outreach and marketing tools to educate business about "one-stop" employment and training services and assist them in finding qualified workers.

"We've been chosen in a competitive grant process to join up with other states to get the word out to employers about our worker training and job services," Flanagan said. "This is a great opportunity for Alaska to be part of a national outreach project aimed at helping employers get qualified, trained workers using the latest marketing strategies."

The Employment Security Division provides employment and training services for the Alaska Job Center Network, made up of 22 Alaska Job Centers throughout the state. The Job Centers are set up with supporting partner agencies to help Alaska workers train for and find jobs, and to help Alaska businesses find qualified, trained workers. The Network runs the state's largest Internet pool of qualified workers, called the Alaska Job Bank, where employers can advertise job openings online, at no cost.

Along with Alaska, participating states also awarded this opportunity are Washington, which will serve as lead state responsible for the grant administration, Iowa, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Montana and Missouri.
