May 16, 2002
No. 02-27

The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development released the Demographic Profiles from the Summary File 3 (SF3) files. This information was collected from both the Census 2000 Short- and Long-Form Questionnaires and provides social, economic, and housing data including employment, income, poverty, school enrollment, and educational attainment information. The four page profiles are in PDF format and are available at the state, borough or census area, Alaska Native Regional Corporation, Alaska Native Village, and the place (community) levels.

Examples of the data included in this release:

--The median family income for Alaska in 2000 was $59,036. Aleutians West Census Area was highest of the State's boroughs and census areas at $72,500 while Wade Hampton was lowest at $29,867.

--The median age for Alaskans in 2000 was 32.4 years. This compares with a state high in the Haines Borough of 40.7 years and a low in Wade Hampton of 20.0.

-- In 2000, over 5,400 of Alaska's grandparents are the primary providers for their grandchildren.

Tables from SF3 Demographic Profiles are available online at the Census and Geographic Information Network's 2000 Census web site.
