Safety Program Earns Second Year of Exemptions from Inspections

(Juneau) – A Juneau dentist’s office has for the second time earned state recognition for implementing outstanding on-the-job safety and health programs for employees.

Dr. Lonnie Anderson, D.D.S., who employs seven people at his dental office at 9211 Lee Smith Drive in Juneau, recently received the “Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program” (SHARP) award from the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The SHARP award is administered by the office of Alaska Occupational Safety and Health (AKOSH) in the Division of Labor Standards and Safety, which will present Dr. Anderson with the award certificate at a recognition ceremony at his office this spring.

The SHARP award is presented to employers who can demonstrate lower-than-average accident rates for their industry; implement safety and health systems; demonstrate good industry practices, comply with and exceed AKOSH regulations, and demonstrate these achievements through an on-site safety inspection and health system review by state inspectors.

In recognition of Dr. Anderson’s achievement, his dental practice will be exempted from AKOSH general inspections for two years, though it will remain subject to enforcement regulations in cases of employee complaints or accident investigations. He received his first SHARP award on Dec. 22, 2003, earning him one year’s exemption.
