Alaska Labor Department To Hold Safe + Sound Week Event

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development will observe "Safe + Sound" week from August 13-19. Safe + Sound week is a nationwide event sponsored by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to raise awareness and understanding of the value of safety and health programs.

The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development's Occupational Safety and Health program is partnering with the Associated General Contractors of Alaska (AGC) to host a Safe + Sound lunch and learn on August 16 in Anchorage. Lunch will be provided by AGC to participants.

Rhonda Gerharz, chief fraud investigator with the Alaska Division of Workers' Compensation, will discuss recently passed legislation that clarifies the definition of an independent contractor. She will also share information about project owner, general contractor, and subcontractor joint liability for uninsured injuries that occur during a contract period and the financial burden association with hiring uninsured businesses.
