No. 24-3

JUNEAU, Alaska — The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOLWD) recently signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to become a SkillBridge program partner. The DOD SkillBridge program is an opportunity for service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through industry training, apprenticeships, or work experience during the last 180 days of service. DOD SkillBridge connects transitioning service members with industry partners in real-world job experience.

For service members, DOD SkillBridge provides an invaluable chance to work and learn in civilian career areas. For industry partners, DOD SkillBridge is an opportunity to access and leverage the world's most highly trained and motivated workforce at no cost. Service members participating in DOD SkillBridge programs continue receiving their military compensation and benefits, while industry partners provide civilian training and work experience.

Service members can be granted up to 180 days of permissive duty to focus solely on training full-time with approved industry partners after their chain of command, field grade commander, provides written authorization and approval. These industry partners offer real-world training and in-demand work experience while having the opportunity to evaluate the service member's suitability for future employment.

Commissioner-Designee Catherine Muñoz said, “I am very excited about this new partnership with the Department of Defense and the Skillbridge program. SkillBridge is a unique opportunity to connect our highly skilled service members with good jobs in Alaska. I encourage Alaska’s industries to consider starting their own SkillBridge program. The Department of Labor and Workforce Development is ready to help you get started.”

Service members can now apply for DOLWD internship positions on the DOD SkillBridge website, by searching for “State of Alaska.” Additionally, DOLWD is ready to serve Alaska businesses that want to apply for a DOD SkillBridge partnership. The department can aid businesses to create their DOD SkillBridge applications, answer questions about the application process, and provide best practices for applying. You can contact the DOLWD Business Connections Team at 907-269-4777 to get connected with a staff member ready to assist.
